The Phoenix Hotel stands on land that has seen many changes over the centuries. At the end of the 17th century, a row of cottages stood here, one of which can still be seen today on the corner opposite Church House. The hotel caters for local people, businesses and visitors to the area, and provides excellent service in elegant surroundings. The ground floor was recently extensively redesigned to create a new bar, restaurant, reception and private dining suite. We have an on-going programme of bedroom refurbishment, due for completion in 2001. The Phoenix succeeded another famous hotel in Dereham, the King's Arms which stood overlooking the Market Place. It has been said that the Phoenix was so named as it rose like the mythical bird from the ashes of the King's Arms.
